Webinars on Nanotechnology for a Knowledge Society in Emerging Economies and Developing Countries

Session 1:
2 September 2010
13.00-15.00 GMT (15.00-17.00 Continental European Summer Time)

Session 2:

7 September 2010
8.45-10.45 GMT (10.45-12.45 Continental European Summer Time)

Join the online debate on contributions nanotechnology may make to a knowledge society in developing countries and emerging economies from your own office with experts on Nanotechnology and Society in the Netherlands, Brazil, South Africa and India. The webinars offer a platform for information exchange on good practices and proposals for international cooperation among governments of the Netherlands, the EU and International Cooperation Partner Countries of the EU (developing countries and emerging economies).

Speakers:

The webinars take place in the framework of the Nanorecht & Vrede project supported by Nanopodium www.nanopodium.nl and ICPC-NanoNet www.icpc-nanonet.org. The outcome of the workshop will be reported to the Dutch Commission for the Societal Dialogue on Nanotechnology who is currently organising a public dialogue on nanotechnology in the Netherlands.

Online workshop on Nanotechnology and PhotoVoltaics

Date: 16 April 2010, 12.45-15.15 GMT

Currently the world’s fastest growing energy technology, photovoltaic production is increasing by roughly 50% each year. Find out more about current developments.

Expert speakers included Prof Dr Wim Sinke - a representative of the European Technology Platform on Photovoltaics
and Prof Dr Lucimara S. Roman - a senior expert in Nanotechnology for Photovoltaics.

Technical problems prevented Prof. Dr Teketel Yohannes Anshebo  of the University of Addis Ababa and Director of the African School on Nanoscience for Solar Energy Conversion to present, but we are pleased to be able to make his presentation slides available for you.

Nanotechnology for Water Purification - Online Workshops

In December 2009 ICPC-NanoNet organised and hosted three free online workshops focusing on “Nanotechnology for Water Purification”. The first session was led by Dr Ineke Malsch of Malsch TechnoValuation, who  delivered a presentation on “European funding possibilities for European and non-European researchers” followed by a question and answer session.

Subsequent sessions were led by Prof. Dr Eugene Cloete, Head of the Microbiology Department of the University of Pretoria, South Africa; Dr Rui Krause, Department of Chemical Technology, University of Johannesburg, South Africa; Dr Patrick Dunlop, University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, UK; Dr Bas Hofs - KWR Water Cycle Research Institute, The Netherlands; and Dr Lorette Scifo - LABEIN Tecnalia, Spain.

The topics addressed included ‘Control of Biofouling in Nanofiltration Systems’; ‘Functionalized nanotubes/polyurethane composites for the removal of chlorinated organics in water’; ‘Water Treatment in Developing Regions – Using Nanotechnology to Enhance Solar Disinfection’; ‘Nanotechnology for Water Treatment: Promises, Questions and Detection of C60’; and ‘Photocatalytic Decontamination of Water by Nano-TiO2: Perspectives and Challenges’.

The talks generated stimulating and lively discussions on technical, economic and safety issues.

Since each workshop was heavily oversubscribed a second series will be held later this year for those who did not manage to secure a place. Meanwhile, the presentations and slides highlighting the research interest of the speakers and several other participants are available free at the ICPC-Nanonet website for registered users, who can continue their discussions on the online forum on the website or by contacting the relevant experts directly.

Nanoscientists from Europe, or from the International Cooperation Partner Countries to the EU, are welcome to propose their own teleconference/online workshop related to nanotechnology, which can be organised by ICPC-Nanonet on request.
